Kind of Project: A blank canvas. A dilapidated site with neglected woodland and orchard.
Design Brief: Overall design, development, maintenance and further ongoing development.
Our Solution: Firstly, I designed an overall strategy for the scheme. Work started on the structural areas, patios and paths. We also set about revamping the woodland, by planting additional trees, shrubs and herbaceous perennials, as well as bulbs like Allium ursinum and Eranthis hyemalis. After this, we renovated of the old orchard by adding apple tree cultivars, such as Beauty of Bath and Jonathan.
Then, we created two large ponds and borders with water features on varying levels, and a stream between the two ponds. Once marginal vegetation became established, the new features attracted water voles.
In addition, we also constructed bird boxes to RSPB specifications to encourage specific bird species to nest.
